Blogging 101: Daily Prompt Response

Wow. This is the first daily prompt that I ever responded to, and it’s quite the prompt for a first time. Here it is:

You’ve come into possession of one vial of truth serum. Who would you give it to (with the person’s consent, of course) — and what questions would you ask?

There are a plethora of people I could ask, and an even bigger plethora of questions I could ask. But I suppose I would actually give it to….myself. Yes, myself.

The subconscious mind has always been intriguing to me, and especially now more since I’m taking a Psychology course in college. I think that I already know all the answers about myself, but do I really?

According to our Psych professor (who is the least bit exciting) our subconscious minds are reflections of our desires that we choose not to act upon. Our subconscious thoughts are often revealed through our dreams, as well as in our Freudian slips.

If I had truth serum, I would give it to myself, and then ask the questions I ask myself all the time, but already have a pre-conceived answer for. The problem with asking ourselves questions (without truth serum) is that instead of answering truthfully, we usually answer how others want us to, or what we would like the answer to be, rather than what it actually is.

As to what questions I would ask myself? Everything, I suppose. If I really like my life, my job, my career choice, my university choice, etc. Often times we doubt ourselves about whether or not we’re heading in the right direction, asking ourselves over and over, but never really devising an answer.

This post probably didn’t make any sense, but that’s okay, because I usually don’t make much sense at all. Let me know what you all think!

Very interesting take on the truth serum assignment! I wouldn’t have thought to take it ourselves to find the real answers…
    Cheers!

This is interesting! But a really good take on it. If I am not mistaken you might actually have to do something really similar at one point of your studies (analyzing yourself), which might turn out in a really interesting but very hard task… I think you might not need that serum to answer your questions truthfully, as you are already being critical enough. So maybe just really take your time to ask one question after the other and you might get to the truth. You probably already know the truth. But as you said, it might not be what others want to hear. So it is not about knowing the truth, it is more about standing up for it? What do you think?

You make a really good point about standing up for the truth. Of course, truth is all subjective, which is why there are so many different opinions in the world. Sometimes I think people just get so caught up in worrying about what society considers to be “true” that we often don’t express our true thoughts, emotions and desires.

Thanks for the read and comment!

I like your idea — I’m afraid that I might find out things that I didn’t really want to know!

I would be afraid of that too, but I also think it would be really interesting to know! Is what we say and think every day really what’s on our mind, or not? Good philosophical question, I suppose.

Hey it did make sense and I liked your approach to the prompt. Hmm.. I’d like to give the truth serum to myself too but for me it would be to actually find out the truth. I have many questions for myself but I feel it will take a lot more exploring to find out.
